The XLR-V will have a 440-horsepower 4.4-liter supercharged V8.

The current luxury car market includes sedans, coupes and convertibles—most of them offered by traditional luxury brands. Some rank as flagship models with the latest in automotive technology, power and luxury. Others are lower-priced vehicles that include a comfortable number of amenities.

Lexus Leads in Total Sales
Lexus has become the top luxury brand in the U.S. and offers five luxury car nameplates. The revamped, third-generation GS—a 2006 model that went on sale early in calendar 2005—became the first Lexus car offered with all-wheel drive. Also noteworthy are the sleeker styling, increased safety features and a new 245-horsepower 3.0-liter V6. Come calendar 2006, Lexus promises to offer a gasoline-electric hybrid version of the GS called the GS 450h. It will be the world's first luxury hybrid sedan.

Lexus is the only luxury marque that offers two nameplates in the lower-priced luxury car segment, with its front-wheel-drive ES 330 and rear-wheel-drive IS 300. Both cars have starting MSRPs around $29,000. The ES 330 is the top-selling Lexus auto. Meantime, in the 2006 model year the IS will debut as a new-generation larger family of sedans offering rear-wheel and all-wheel-drive models starting in fall of 2005.

Lexus SC 430

The large flagship Lexus LS 430 sedan ranks second in the brand's car sales and includes an impressive list of features including a climate control system that monitors sunlight intensity on each side of the car. It automatically delivers more cool air to the sunny side for more efficient cooling. Meantime, Lexus' convertible, the two-seat SC 430, has a power-operated retractable hardtop.

BMW Ranks Second in U.S. Sales
In recent years, BMW has been adding new models to its stable of luxury cars. Besides the flagship 7-Series sedan, the German automaker sells a 6-Series coupe and convertible that have 2+2 seating.

The lowest priced BMW in the U.S. market, the 3-Series arrives in the States about mid-year as a new-generation 2006 model with new 6-cylinder inline engines, new 5-link rear suspension and high-tech features such as Brake Standby and Start Off Assistant. The former can detect when a driver lets off the accelerator pedal abruptly, thereby indicating a likely cornering maneuver or sudden stop. The system automatically applies enough pressure in the brake system to snug the brake pads closer to the rotors for immediate slowing and stopping power. Meantime, Start Off Assistant helps a driver move smoothly into a startup when the car is stopped on a hill. By the fourth quarter of this year, BMW's all-wheel-drive 3-Series versions will begin to arrive in showrooms.

Not to be missed on several BMW models, including the 5- and 6-Series: the high-tech active steering that senses, based on the car's speed, turning input and automatically adjusts the steering ratio for quick response.

Cadillac Gets to Top Three
Cadillac bested Mercedes-Benz in the past year and is the only U.S.-based brand to rank in the top three luxury makes.

Cadillac offers four luxury car nameplates. The entry-level CTS was the first car to wear Cadillac's "new edge" styling and has been adding sportier handling and engine offerings over the years. For example, the high-performance CTS-V model is powered by a 400-horse V8 and includes performance-tuned shock absorbers, springs and stabilizer bars.

Cadillac introduced a new flagship sedan for 2005. The STS is a 5-passenger, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan with styling similar to the CTS's. The STS has two engine choices: a 255-horsepower 3.6-liter V6 and a 320-horsepower 4.6-liter Northstar V8.

Cadillac XLR-V

Cadillac's largest car, the DeVille, is a full-size sedan with V8 and more than 43 inches of legroom in the back seat. A new-generation DeVille, to be called the DTS, is coming as a 2006 model and will be in showrooms in fall 2005. It has new styling, inside and out, and a trunk with 18.8 cubic feet of space. The 2006 DTS is a front-wheel-drive car, like its predecessor. There's a choice of Northstar V8s: a 290-horsepower L37 version and a 275-horse LD8. Television's top businessman, Donald Trump, was on the list early to receive an executive limousine version of the new DTS.

Cadillac's highest priced car is the two-seat convertible XLR, which starts at more than $75,000. The sleek model has a retractable hardtop, sophisticated suspension management and 4.6-liter Northstar V8 with 320 horsepower. In the 2006 model year, a performance version arrives as the XLR-V. Its power plant is a 440-horsepower 4.4-liter supercharged Northstar V8.

Domestic Luxury Brands
Ford Motor Co.'s luxury brand, Lincoln, typically slots in fifth or sixth spot among luxury brand sales in the U.S. It continues with its large, flagship Town Car sedan, now available with optional THX-certified premium audio system. THX is used for great sound in commercial theaters and multimedia productions. Lincoln also updated its smaller LS sedan, adding curtain airbags and rear park assist as options on all trim levels and improving transmission shifts.

Lincoln Town Car

New Model Showcase

2008 Nissan Rogue

Quick Facts:

MSRP Price Range:

$19,250 - $21,870

Invoice Price Range:

Not released

Rebates/Incentives:

Not available

Expert Rating:

Not Rated

The Rogue is a new compact crossover utility vehicle aimed at young family buyers. The Ford Bronco is a big, brawny, and powerful off roader that had strong sales especially to fans of the big and brawny V8 powered four wheelers. This vehicle has certainly been an icon to hard-core off roaders because of the fact that it has a simple yet tough and rugged design and muscular structure that guarantees quite an exceptional maneuverability, either on the road, or off of it.

An instant success, the Ford Bronco then left behind all the other emerging leisure four-wheel drives in the market because of sales of 18, 200 units all during its entire first year of production. This vehicle was continually updated up until 1977. After that year, a much larger Bronco was then introduced. It was built to look like a simple and authentic sport utility vehicle. It has disciplined road manners and features excellent trips on the rough roads.

At the outset, the Ford Bronco was introduced as a competitor for the Jeep CJ-5 and the International Harvester Scout. It was small in size, which had a 92 inch wheelbase. However, this made the Ford Bronco popular for off road and some other uses. But this also made this SUB quite impractical for towing. In the late 1970s, a major redesign based on the Ford F-series truck then brought a larger Bronco to compete now with the Chevrolet K5 Blazer and the Dodge Ramcharger. The Bronco's successor is the Ford Expedition.

Popular culture found the Ford Bronco a part of it. The Ford Bronco was cast in the popular culture society in 1994 as the vehicle which O.J. Simpson had traveled during the much-proclaimed low-speed chase with police through the Los Angeles area. The Bronco that was used that time was owned by Al Cowlings and was a white 1993 model.

The Ford Bronco was designed to have its axles and brakes sourced from the Ford F-100 four wheel drive truck. Its front axle was located by leading arms and a lateral track bar, thus allowing the use of coil springs which gave the Bronco a tight turning circle, long wheel travel, and an anti-dive geometry which was quite useful for snowplowing. It was also given a more conventional rear suspension with leaf springs in a typical Hotchkiss design. Given as an option was a heavy duty suspension. Its engine was the Ford 170 cubic inch straight six that was modified with solid valve lifters, a six quart oil pan, heavy duty fuel pump, oil-bath air cleaner, and a carburetor with a float bowl compensated against tilting. Styling was attacked with simplicity and economy, thus giving the Ford Bronco a look with all glass flat, bumpers with simple C-sections, a simple box-section ladder frame, and basic left and right door skins identical except for mounting holes.

Production was then dropped in 1997 for this SUV. However, come 2004, at the North American International Auto Show, a Bronco concept car was introduced that held some features of the concept car still intact. What changed for this concept car was that it held a 2.0-liter intercooled turbo diesel engine and a six-speed transmission.

Acura MDX: Redesigned for 2006

Known as the Honda MDX in Japan and Australia, the Acura MDX is a mid-size SUV built by Honda of Canada Manufacturing Ltd. Its exterior styling was also updated to give the MDX a muscular, performance-oriented look representative of its impressive powertrain. Its front end has been done over with a shaper, more tapered look and an integrated chin spoiler applied on to reinforce this time the new styling and direct air to the sides of the vehicle.

This new model also receives an assortment of new features that have been designed to make it even more comfortable and refined. This list includes the brushed metal-look instrument panel trim, ambient foot lights, and welcome illumination. The 2006 Acura MDX models that are equipped with the Touring Package made available, it has the eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat that has been enhanced to feature the power-adjustable lumbar support that flexes to match the natural curve of the driver's spine.

The 1966 Pontiac GTO

What is the most popular muscle car of all time that goes zero to sixty in 6.5 seconds flat?

The answer is, the 1966 Pontiac GTO which is a choice muscle car. In fact, when it was released, it quickly became the best selling muscle car of all time. With the '66 GTO, Pontiac truly created a new masterpiece that has remained in high demand amongst muscle car enthusiasts for nearly four decades.

The '66 GTO has incredible features. Most notable are the unique headlights and the exceptional contours throughout the body that are the true definition of the term sleek. Of course, being a muscle car, the '66 Pontiac GTO came in a variety of colors and styles when it was produced including the sports coupe model, the hardtop coupe and the convertible.

If you are shopping for a '66 Pontiac GTO muscle car, it is probably useful for you to know that the hardtop coupes are the most common, followed by the convertibles. Comparably, there were a lot fewer sports coupe models made, so they are by far the rarest.

Pontiac's GTO line gained popularity with the release of their 1964 model with its racy style, its powerful V8 engine, and its dual exhaust system. Though it had phony hood scoops, it was definitely a muscle car with an attitude. The '66 model had a lot of the same features as the '64, but being the second body style for Pontiac's GTO line, it redefined style with pizzazz.

The '66 GTO most commonly has a four-barrel 389 engine, but there was also a tri-power option. After its release, Pontiac added an XS Ram Air package to the tri-power engine giving it a hotter cam and greater power – close to 380 hp – truly ideal for a muscle car. The XS Ram Air package upgrade included the cam and stiffer valve springs along with an accessory pack that enabled the decorative hood scoop to be converted into a functional cold-air induction system. There are very few 1966 Pontiac GTOs that have the XS Ram Air setup, so they are definitely unique muscle cars for a muscle car collector.

In regard to muscle cars, there are many that are strongly desired by muscle car enthusiasts. The 1966 Pontiac GTO just happens to be a favorite for many. Style, performance and originality are among the traits that make the 1966 Pontiac GTO one of the hottest muscle cars around.

Super Exotic Sports Cars

Before we start, let's define the term 'super exotic sports car'. Sports cars, by definition are borderline racing cars; boasting powerful performance and sleek looks. Their prestige makes them expensive, and thus the domain of a select few. With reference to sports cars, the term "exotic" refers to vehicles produced in very limited numbers. This of course increases their exclusivity and by virtue of this, their value. Exotic sports cars will, in all likelihood, be built by smaller manufacturers or perhaps the super high-end vehicles will be created by some of the better-known car companies outside of the United States, as exclusive models.

Many exotic sports cars are the stuff of legend. The world's fastest car, the McLaren F1, for instance is a well-known exotic. Although only around one hundred F1s were produced and the manufacturer is not a household name (outside of the Grand Prix circuits of course), the McLarens are coveted sports cars. All exotic sports cars are highly sought after and, as status symbols, are second to none in the sports car world.

But, assuming that you can afford it, is an exotic sports car for you?

It is easy to be seduced by the allure of owning an exotic sports car. Owning one can be very tempting. Amongst the purists, the cars themselves are often considered the pinnacle of design. Any enthusiast who has the means will tell you that when an opportunity to invest in an exotic sports car presents itself, resistance can be very difficult.

One should try and be objective about the proposition though.

Before making such a major commitment, there are three factors you should consider.

Exotic Sports Cars Are Very Expense

The cost of owning such a prestigious car, does not end when you part with the initial payment. Even if one can afford the initial asking price of an exotic (and not many can), one needs to be aware of the likely ongoing running expenses , which can be significant. The maintenance and repair of an exotic car is certain to be expensive compared to non-exotic vehicles and a buyer should attempt to discover what kind of costs he or she is likely to experience in order to keep the car in running order. There can be no cost cutting on parts for these high end vehicles.

Parts for prestige cars are likely to be in short supply, if they are available at all. The likelihood that the owners of exotic sports cars will need to have some parts custom made during their ownership of the vehicle is quite high. And the cost will be significant. This is especially true of older exotics, many of which will have been orphaned when their original manufacturer stopped making cars. Not only will this prove extremely expensive, one can also expect it to be time consuming as well. And, as time passes, the necessary investment will only become greater.

Your usual mechanic cannot be expected to be able to repair exotic sports cars. You will need specialised mechanics with specialised tools to be able to ensure that appropriate and professional repairs are carried out. Not only will such individuals be, in all probability much more expensive than your usual mechanics, you would be very fortunate if you found one in your town. You should expect to have to do a lot of traveling in order to find suitable mechanical help.

All too often a sports car buff will purchase an exotic, without though to the ongoing costs, and, as a consequence be completely unprepared to handle additional future expenses. A thorough planning of expected costs and the means to meet those costs would certainly be in order.

Reliability Of High End Vehicles

Even though an exotic sports car may represent the ultimate in performance, One cannot assume that it will also be reliable. This will hold particularly true for the older 'classic' exotic cars. As with any high performance machine, exotic sports cars can be quite delicate (temperamental) which will, in all probability, require that you, or someone close to you be regularly on hand to make the adjustments to ensure that the vehicle stays in operating order. Exotic sports cars are well known for the spectacular side of their performance when they running well. However, the other side of the coin is that they are notorious for being among the most temperamental of vehicles that one may encounter.

If you plan to run an exotic sports car on a regular basis, you should be prepared for the highs and los of motoring. The sublime feeling of driving a top car with top performance can often be forgotten if the same car stops and refuses to start many miles from any assistance.

The Drivability of Exotic Cars

Most owners of high performance cars will tell you that such vehicles take 'some getting used too'. Optimum performance comes at a price, and will depend very largely on the skill of the driver. So, if you are relatively inexperienced, then please do not expect to get the best out of your car straight away. This in itself could prove too frustrating for many potentials owners. One should also take into account the relative risk of driving a high performance cars whilst still inexperienced.

For those to whom the additional cost of time in learning to drive a prestige car optimally and safely is not an issue, an additional, problem arises in the adjustment of seats and pedals for example. Small things that are irrelevant in normal cars take on much greater significance when applied to exotic sports cars.

When considering the purchase of an exotic sports car, one must look past the romance and excitement of owning a legendary vehicle. There are real concerns and obstacles to be overcome before the full enjoyment and benefit of owning such a car can be achieved.

Car Accidents Claims And Insurance

If you are not sure of your rights in a car accident that you have experienced, you must consult the best lawyer possible. You can rest assured that the insurance company will have lawyers to represent them.

Your claim is very important and you should not take it for granted especially if you have encountered a serious injury in a car accident. Claims vary differently depending on the type of injuries sustained. Severe injuries include: losing an arm, fractured bones or losing any part of the body.

If you have been hospitalized for a long period of time, you are entitled to a higher compensation. If you are unable to work because of disabilities you may be eligible for a lifelong compensation. The compensation of disabled person will include the beneficiaries of the victim. He will also get the income he earns in a year.

Sometimes, being handicapped allows for the full compensation in filing for a claim. In order to get the compensation, you must choose the best lawyer who will not take advantage of you and your rights as a victim. Sometimes, the law takes advantage of the disabled person and of those who are not aware of the rules.

Claims and compensation will consider the nature and the duration of injuries. If you have recovered from the injuries in days, you will get a smaller compensation compared to severe injuries which might take a month or longer in the hospital to heal. You should not worry about the expenses because you will rightfully get your compensation as long as the case is adjudicated. Pain, suffering, and disability is measured in determining a rightful compensation.

In considering your car's insurance, make sure that you know what your insurance covers. Dealing with the accident requires investigation to know who is at fault, and to find out if the other party is required to give compensation to the victim. An accident lawyer is perfect for this situation. You might not be familiar with the rules of filing for a claim, but a lawyer will be.

The law requires car insurance intended for public use. So it is better to find out if your car is insured and the consequences that you may face should you have an accident. It is important to make sure that the statements that you are going to give to your insurance company are correct so that the claim will be handled accordingly.

If you don't want to face these complications and procedures make sure that you are confident in your driving and knowledge. Car accidents are not be easy to deal with because they can be quite complicated. What is important is that you be given the right compensation for anything you have lost.

Hybrid Cars - Technology Of The Future Or Passing Fad?

Hybrid cars have been getting a lot of buzz the last three or four years, and now with the soaring cost of oil and gasoline, hybrids are expected to get hotter than ever. Here are some Questions and Answers about hybrids.

1. What is a hybrid car?

A vehicle is a hybrid when it combines two or more sources of power. Hybrid cars almost always have a gasoline engine and an auxiliary electric motor system that runs off rechargeable batteries.

We normally assume that the point of hybridization is to save fuel, and that is definitely the case with most of the smaller compacts and sedans. But in fact some of the more upscale hybrid models are more concerned with boosting power and "performance" without the usual loss in fuel efficiency.

2. Do you have to plug your hybrid in at night?

You may assume because a hybrid car runs part of the time off its battery pack, that it is necessary to plug it in at night and recharge the batteries (like a golf cart!). But this is almost never the case. Hybrid cars recharge their batteries "on the fly" by making use of unused energy which is normally wasted during normal driving.

For instance, most have a system that captures some of the energy used while applying the brakes, and converts it to electrical energy to charge the battery. This is called "regenerative braking".

If hybrids had larger battery packs that you could plug into the electricity grid, they would be able to transfer more of the vehicle's power requirements over to the electric motor(s), and use even less gasoline. But most auto makers have been unwilling to go this route, arguing that today's batteries could not take the extra load and more extensive usage.

3. Do you have to replace the batteries?

The short answer is No. Hybrid batteries typically have an 80,000 - 100,000 mile warranty. The U.S. Department of Energy tested them to 160,000 miles and stopped testing because they still performed almost like they were brand new. Some taxi drivers have gone more than 200,000 miles in a Toyota Prius without battery problems.

In any event, since hybrid battery packs have hundreds of cells, individual cells or modules could be replaced if there was a problem.

The best way to keep nickel metal hydride batteries performing at their peak is to keep their charge between 40% and 60% — never fully charged and never fully drained to zero power.

4. How long have hybrids been around?

Alternatives to the ICE (internal combustion engine) in automobiles have been around since at least 1900. The first patent for a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle was filed in 1905. Alternative fuel sources were wiped out as a result of two things. First was the development of the electric self-starter (in 1913) that made gasoline driven cars much easier to start.

The second development was the advent of the age of cheap oil that started around the time of the first World War. This completely removed the economic incentive to look for alternative fuel sources. This is only starting to change now, 80 years later.

5. Are hybrids expensive to purchase?

In January, 2006, there were 10 different hybrid models available from $19,000 to $53,000. The most popular models — the Insight, Civic, and Prius — are less than $30,000. According to auto maker announcements there should be more than 50 models available by 2010. As sales and production increase the prices should not be significantly more than for standard ICE models.

Even with the slightly higher average cost for a hybrid — usually around $3,000 — these additional initial costs can be offset by federal and state tax incentives, lower maintenance costs, and exceptionally strong resale values.

6. Are hybrids small and underpowered?

Initial hybrid models emphasized fuel economy, so were much lighter vehicles, and had smaller engines. The objective was to offset the loss of power in the ICE with additional power from the electric motor. This would result in essentially the same level of power while burning less fuel.

But this principle does not have to result in underpowered vehicles. In fact the Lexus Rx400h and Toyota Highlander Hybrid both have a 270 horsepower power system. And the Lexus GS 450h hybrid sedan is expected to have more than 300 horsepower and go 0-to-60 in less than six seconds. Taking the quest for hybrid power even further, the Toyota Volta concept venicle has a 408 hp power plant.

7. What is the main reason people buy hybrid vehicles?

Saving money on fuel is the first thing most buyers think of. But, in fact, the amount saved on fuel over the life of the vehicle may not equal the extra purchase cost of the hybrid.

There are obviously other factors at play in the gradually building popularity of hybrids. Some people want to make a "green" statement, others simply want to be the first on the block with a new and promising technology.

8. Will hybrid technology save the environment?

There's no doubt about it. Hybrids are becoming more popular. In the past five years hybrid sales in the U.S. have grown 2000 percent. Sales in 2000 were 9,500, and by the end of 2005 had grown to over 200,000.

But even this larger number is just 1.2% of the 17 million new cars sold last year. If every hybrid gave double the current fuel economy, from an average of 20 mpg to, say, 40 mpg, that would save roughly 100,000 gallons of gasoline a day. But that amount pales in comparison to the total daily gasoline consumption in the U.S. — 400 million gallons! The savings of 100,000 gallons would bring that number all the way down to … 399,900,000 gallons.

Not very significant. Obviously governments and auto makers will have to start getting very serious about hybrid technology before it will make a significant difference.

9. Does that mean hybrid technology is only a fad?

No it does not. Because the only way towards a sustainable future is to find a combination of fuels that will reduce our almost total dependence on oil. Hydrogen fueled vehicles will be part of that future, as will fuel cells, deisel, and alternative fuels such as ethanol.

But what is almost certain is that every promising solution will involve some kind of hybrid combination of technologies. So today's hybrid vehicles are an important and necessary step towards a much more promising and sustainable future.

Nissan Skyline

Not commonly found in the United States, the Nissan Skyline is a Japanese sports car with a lot of history. Dating back 45 years, the Nissan Skyline has received many awards and has earned the nickname "Godzilla." While it's far from being the monster machine that it's nickname implies, this Japanese original is larger than life.

After an absence in production for 10 years, Nissan announced that it would release a new GT-R Skyline model in 1989. It was set to compete in the Japan Touring Car Group A racing series and lead the field in an undefeated first season. For the next four years, the GT-R Nissan Skyline was awarded the Japan Touring Car Group A championship. In 1994, in honor of it's spectacular achievements, the Nissan Skyline was given it's own series, which was called the Japan GT Car series. For the years ahead, the Nissan Skyline proved to be a dominating force in Japanese racing. Ultimately, there was never a Skyline GT-R made to comply with standards set forth by the United States. However, Motorex imports and modifies the Nissan Skyline GT-R in order to meet requirements so that the cars may be sold in America.

The Nissan Skyline automobiles are popular among youngsters, as well. Ok, so maybe they don't have a license to drive, but they can certainly burn some rubber on video games and that's exactly what they are doing. Throughout the years, racing video games have become very popular among kids of all ages - both young and old. The Nissan Skyline has appeared in numerous video games after being recognized for it's speed and sleek sporty design. Along those same lines, the Nissan Skyline has been recognized in many of the biggest motion pictures to feature a racing theme. Clearly, the motto for these cars are outlined in their sleek design and sports car appearance.

The Nissan Skyline is an intermediate-size automobile, which is originally manufactured in Japan before being exported to other countries. It is sold as either a coupe or sedan style automobile and has been produced, in various models, since the 1950s. In 2008, the next generation of Nissan Skyline GT-R automobiles may be sold in the United States. Until that time, these luxury style sports cars can be converted to local standards by various manufacturers who agree to sale the automobiles. Only time will tell what the Nissan Skyline has in store but, with its rich racing history, you can bet they will race out of stock.

Building the Best Car Stereo System

Today car sound systems are big business. People, especially the younger generation, want to build the very best in car sound systems and they usually do not care what they cost. This can become an expensive undertaking but for those who value music it is worth every penny.

Your first order of business is to decide on a proper car stereo head unit. This is the main control unit of the entire system and comes in the form of a tuner, compact disc player or cassette player or a combination of two. These days most people go with a compact disc player head unit as they are the most readily available and most people buy compact discs for their musical selection instead of cassette tapes that are somewhat hard to come by these days.

The head unit should be wired in where the existing stereo unit rests. The two may be different sizes so you will most likely need to buy a universal mounting kit. They are available from most large retailers and run under $25. Also, you should pick up a universal wiring harness to make the installation go more smoothly. If you have no knowledge of car wiring systems it is easy to short out the car or the stereo system if you do not know what you are doing. Universal wiring harnesses come with detailed instructions on matching up the wires by automotive type.

Next you will need to determine speakers for your sound system. This can be a tough decision depending on what your basic needs are. There are several speaker systems to choose from and you will need to pay close attention to the head unit you have purchased as it will tell you how many speakers it can handle on its own. Be sure to check the power rating and size of the speakers. You have so much room to work with in your car without taking away from passenger space. However, some prefer to use the trunk space to mount speakers and other accessories.

Along with speakers there is the amplifier. The amplifier is a device that will boost overall power and provide better quality high volume sound to your system. Amplifiers are available in a wide variety of sizes and prices depending on the power you wish to have for your car sound system.

Extras would include MP3 hook up adapters, bass boosters, compact disc changers, and lights. All of these are available from large retailers nationwide. You could spend a little or a lot depending on the brand and quality that you desire.

Keep in mind that the more complicated a car sound system the harder it is to install. Some companies that sell complete systems offer free installation with a purchase. This is a wise choice for someone who knows little about car stereo installation. Not only will all the equipment be installed properly to guard against malfunction but it will also look nice. Part of installing a system is running wires and capping lines that can be difficult for someone unsure of what they are doing.

Top 9 Used Car Salesmen Tricks, and How to Avoid Them

One of the biggest moments in many people's lives is driving off in their brand-spanking-new automobile. It's an exhilarating feeling. It's also a big moment because in that very instant, that brand-spanking-new car loses a big chunk of its value-the difference between the retail price you paid and the car's wholesale value. That's typically thousands gone in an instant.

That's why some car buyers choose to shop around for a used car. You save yourself that steep initial drop-off in value. More importantly, you get a car that runs just as well, is just as dependable, and looks and feels as good as that new car-that is, if you play your cards right.

For if there is one pitfall of buying a used car, it's the risk of buying a lemon, a junker-call it what you want, you get the point: the wrong car. Used car dealers, after all, have nearly as bad a reputation, if not worse, than lawyers do. This holds true for individual people selling their cars through newspapers, Web auctions and classified sites, or with the old-fashioned signs in their car windows. The saying, "Buyer Beware," no where has more meaning than with cars.

The opposite to that, of course, is that there are some real steals out there in used cars. We're talking about quality vehicles that will perform beyond your expectations at a low price. Here's how to find these perfect used vehicles, and avoid the top 10 scams that used car dealers everywhere try to pull on you.

1. Get a second opinion for the hype.
Used car dealers will bombard you with every adjective under the book to sell you on a car-sporty, thrifty, fast, and etc. Don't take their word for it. Instead, find someone you know, whether a neighbor, a colleague, a family member, or a friend, who owns the same make and model of the vehicle, and ask them for their opinion.

2. Do a background check.
One of the most unethical, but legal, things someone can do to you is sell you a used car that's been in a flood (and sort of repaired), or one that's had 10 previous owners (none of whom repaired it). To be sure you don't fall victim to this, track down a history report, including a clearance check on the vehicle title. You can even get some of this information from the seller, simply by asking why they are selling it. You'd be surprised what beans people may spill.

3. Examine for past damage.
Used car dealers may also try to peddle a vehicle that was wrecked in a major accident. It's amazing what autobody experts can do to repair a car's exterior. So don't go by the outer appearances of a vehicle. Before you buy it, make sure that it does not have serious damage to its frame, which it would have if it was involved in a crash.

4. Call up your trusted mechanic.
Used car dealers, especially the big lots, will say they put their used cars through a "100 point inspection," or something like that. Once again, a second opinion is in order. Get this one from your own mechanic. He'll be able to tell how good a shape the car actually is in. Also be sure to ask him or her how often the car had been serviced. A good mechanic can even gauge that.

5. Research for recalls.
Needless to say, a used car dealer may sell you a car that's actually under recall in his mad rush to get the car off his lot. So be sure to call the car manufacturer, or visit their Web site, to see if the vehicle has any active recalls.

6. Avoid the leftover lemon.
Along with recalled vehicles, dealers may even perpetrate something much worse on you-sell you a lemon. (By definition, a lemon is a car that's still under warranty, which has such major problems that, warranty or not, it still cannot be fixed in a reasonable way.) The best way to avoid this is to research in Consumer Reports or the various automobile magazines, which all have yearly reviews of every make and model on the market. They'll tell you whether a kind of car is known for being a lemon and prone to breakdowns.

7. See through the old paint and bait.
Along with performing their "100 point inspection," car dealers may shine and wax a used car-even repaint it-to hide dents, dings, and rust spots. A keen eye, though, can see right through this.

8. Take the test drive.
Once you've done all your research, homework, extra credit, and everything else called for in the first seven steps, then comes the fun-the test drive. Drive the car for as long as its owner or dealer will allow you. Then you'll get a better feel for how the vehicle handles, accelerates, brakes, and otherwise suits your tastes (or doesn't).

9. Be wary of the pushy seller.
At any stage of the game-from the moment you first talk to the seller to the test drive-be careful if the seller gets pushy. Any dealer or seller who is in a rush to move a vehicle should set off bells and whistles. Why the rush? Are they hiding something? In some cases the seller may just be excited to sell you the car-and actually happy for you-but in many other cases, they may be up to something. Better be safe than sorry.

Follow these 9 simple steps to avoid the scams and pitfalls of used car deals, and you could get the car of your dreams-for far less than you'd pay if it was brand-new. Plus, you get that same high when you drive your new used car home, without losing thousands of dollars.

The Buzz of Street Racing

What is it about street racing that just drives teenagers and young adults out of their wits? Even the most uninterested person will have to admit that, in some way, speed still provides an exciting rush unparalleled by any human feeling. Why else would there be numerous movies and video games created to tell the story of, or simulate street racing? Despite the popularity and fanfare however, it is just imperative to know that street racing is very dangerous and illegal.

When man first started racing automobiles, one thing was certain: race car drivers were held in high regard and idolized by spectators. People would dream of being race car drivers themselves one day. The problem was, commercial vehicles back then were just not fast enough. As time went on, new race cars were developed and the ability to reach speeds that were unheard of in the beginning is now realized. Likewise, commercial automobiles increased in top speed as well. Now, because of this, racing fans have taken matters into their own hands and into the streets.

Vehicles used for street racing are normally commercial vehicles that are souped up to racing performance levels. Engine and power enhancements, complex exhaust systems and fuel intake are just some of the items on a racer's shopping list. These people are willing to spend thousands of dollars in turning their regular city car into a wild, speed-hungry racing machine. Exterior design and artwork is also spent on in order to match the inner robustness of the vehicle. In addition to the value of the experience, street racing has become an arena to showcase new car set up designs and the latest innovations in automobile racing technology. Here, looks definitely have to be as good as the performance.

Street racing usually takes place at night or before dawn, in a long, clean stretch of road pitting two cars (and drivers) against each other. However, there are some instances when an entire block (or series of blocks) is turned into a racing circuit. The number of participants in a race may also vary. Sometimes, even 3 or 4 cars race at the same time. This is precisely the reason why street racing is illegal. Thousands of deaths have been the result of street racing accidents all over the world.

So how do you control the need for speed? Take it to the strip. Many municipalities in various countries all over the world have recognized the enjoyment and excitement of car racing and have now developed car racing programs for the youth. Racing strips have been built and organizations have been formed for legal and controlled racing for speed enthusiasts. Before buying a Ford Mustang, you must know that there are many models out there ranging in power to suit whatever needs you may have. When looking at buying your Ford Mustang, first approach the seller and retrieve all the information necessary to identify the vehicle. After identifying the vehicle and you are still interested, take the Mustang for a test drive. After the test drive, leave without discussing a purchse, even if you love the car. Shop around; get a selection for yourself to chose from before purchasing your Mustang.

Before approaching any sellers about a Mustang, you need to know a little about the history of the Ford Mustang. Knowing the history of the car and the models and engine options available by year will prepare you for the first step of purchasing your Mustang. Also, the history of the Mustang may also make you a die-hard fan, and being a die-hard will make you notice every imperfection- a skill that comes in handy when purchasing a used late model car.

Your Needs
Perhaps you may just need a reliable daily driver and a Ford Mustang V6 could be your best option. If you want a nicer car with a V8, more power, aggression, and control, a GT Mustang model may suit your needs. If you want a sunny day car with a lot of stock power, a Cobra Mustang may suit you best. So before you start looking at different cars, decide what your practical uses will be and that will immediately narrow your search down for your Ford Mustang.

Also, what is your price range? Check NADA and Kelley Blue Book to see what to expect price-wise for a particular year and model Ford Mustang. After finding out what is in your budget, shop away!

Identify the Vehicle
Identify and validate the model of the car. Is the car the same car that came with the engine, transmission, interior, and exterior options as the car named on the VIN (Vehicle Identification Number)? To know this for sure, look into some VIN decoders or online services such as CarFax History Reports. Also, independent research of the car's history may be necessary because not all accidents are reported to authorities. The VIN number is a stamped plate bolted to the dash under the windshield of late model Mustangs. Also, look at and verify the engine code. The engine code is the 8th digit in the VIN, and the model year is coded in the 10th digit of the VIN. Also check and see if the vehicle is the stock color paint and notice any and all performed body work.

1) The VIN (Vehicle Identification Number) is a stamped plate bolted to the dash under the windshield.
2) The EIN (Engine Identification Number) is also attached to the valve cover.
3) The Mustang should also have a certification label fixed at the drivers side door pillar.
4) The transmission identification tag is attached by the left side engine-to-bell housing bolt for manual transmission, and is attached to the right side on automatics.
5) The rear differential identification tag is bolted to the rear differential cover.

Test Drive
Now that you know if you are remotely interested in a Mustang out there, you should take it for a test drive and notice how she reacts to rpm changes, gear shifts, braking, turning, and extreme driving as well. Ask the owner for a repair and service data log sheet just before test-driving. If he has no log sheet for maintenance, you are already one hand up on the seller. Check the tire pressure, oil level, and lighting of headlights, brake lights, and turn signals before starting the engine. Now start the car and listen for any abnormalities in the engine sound.

Now, check all of the seat belts. Don't be surprised if the passenger side seat belts are on backwards- that is a common TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) from Ford. Check the interior wear and be sure to be writing down all of the imperfections you notice in the car at all. Check all of the power options, including the CD player.

Now you are ready to hit the road. Buckle up and take the car for a test drive. At first, drive normally to get the vehicle into proper operating conditions. After a warm-up, get on the throttle and note how the car performs at WOT (Wide Open Throttle). Come to a compete stop and test the braking capabilities. Be sure to travel over a speed bump to test suspension components as well. After you perform your various tests to decide the mechanical structure of the Mustang, return it back to the seller and tell him you have a few more similar cars to go test drive but you will stay in touch.

Don't forget to log all of the imperfections and data on the car!

Decisions, Decisions
After you have test driven and experienced a handful of Ford Mustangs, compare the logs you have made about the work needed and maintenance to be performed to see what car will suit your needs best. Recall the seller's advertised price and compare that to NADA for high mileage cars, or Kelley Blue Book for lower mileage cars. NADA rewards cars with lower miles by adding to the seller's price, but hinders high mileage cars by lowering the value for the specific year. Now that you know what Ford Mustang you want to negotiate on, you are ready to put your business skills to the test.

Negotiate
After narrowing your choices down into your budget, tastes, and preferences, return to the seller to negotiate. Always negotiate at Trade-In Value, and work up. Never pay more than book value for a car though, unless it is modified in a way that calls for such a price. But remember also; never pay more than half of what the seller paid for his modifications when purchasing a used car.

Finalize
Never pay cash. At least write a check and be sure to get some immediate and written receipt of payment for the vehicle to ensure your financial safety. Now, expect less than a week for the title to reach you for an in-state purchase, and expect no more than 2 weeks for a title on an out-of-state purchase. After receiving the title, go to the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) to get a tag for the new title transfer. Be prepares to pay taxes that range in price based on area and car type to receive the title and tag. These fees are mandatory and fair to help pay for road maintenance, etc.
Enjoy

Now that you own your very own Ford Mustang, enjoy the car, modify if you wish, have fun with the new doors the Ford Mustang will open, and remember, we will see you on the road!

Radar Detectors - Could One Have Saved Me?

I remember it well! I was on a fast stretch of road, but keeping to the limit for that stretch. I came towards a village, where the speed limit dropped by 20mph. Obviously I slowed down, and continued to slow. The road curved round to the left and went downhill. All this within about 100 yards of the slow down sign. And guess who was waiting for me at the bottom of the bend? Yes, you guessed it, the boys in blue.

I was fined for being 4mph over the limit! Grr. It didn't seem right then, and it doesn't seem right now either. So was there anything I could have done to avoid this in justice?

Radar detectors are extremely effective for warning drivers that they are approaching a speed detection device that uses a radar system. The speed is calculated using the difference between the transmit frequency and receive frequency (also known as the Doppler shift). They are essentially microwave radio receivers, and as such, it is important that the detector you want can identify the radio waves emitted by the equipment used by the authorities.

Radar detectors come essentially in two flavours, corded or uncorded. The corded typically mounts to your windshield, and because of its location offers an aerial less-obstructed detection. Cordless is as the name suggests, and offers you portable convenience to have the unit located where you want. This also means that you can use the unit for different vehicles without having to resort to multiple units or fiddly removals or re-installs.

There are some important considerations when shopping for radar detectors. These include band detection, which allow a range of police radar devices to be detected, distance of detection, ability to send a jamming signal, and, of course, price. In addition to these concerns, anyone interested in purchasing a motorcycle radar detector should check that the detector comes with an ear jack, because you will have to rely on an aural signal for these devices to be effective for you.

Some radar detectors can be extremely expensive but finding a discount unit is relatively simple if you know where to look. One option for purchasing radar detectors cheaply is to search for wholesale electronic distributors who have their own retail outlets. You will need to ascertain from the manufacturer that the detector that you are trying to buy will work in your area, or has band detection available. The stockist should have information about the frequencies used by your local authorities as well, so try and find this out before you part with any hard earned cash. Bear in mind that the cost of a radar detector is far less than the cost of the speeding tickets that you may face - so or protect yourself, get a radar detector.

Used radar detectors prices are reasonable and sometimes negotiable. They can be purchased from owners, dealers, or from superstores. Try to buy used radar detectors directly from the owners if possible, as you are likely to get a better deal. In the case of superstores, used radar detector prices are not normally negotiable, though they are usually sold for a reasonable, predetermined price. However, it sometimes pays to ask for a cash deal and to have cash ready, just in case! Such companies recondition the units to sell as refurbished items. A specialty of refurbished radar detectors is that their prices are remarkably low and they provide the same benefit that a new radar detector offers.

A radar detector can be purchased via the Internet too, however, a local car audio store should be able to inform you of state laws that might limit purchasing options.

Tips To Prevent Car Theft

Tips to Prevent Car Theft

Take Your Keys. Nearly 20 percent of all vehicles stolen have the keys in them.

Lock Your Car. Approximately 50 percent of all vehicles stolen were left unlocked.

Never Hide a Second Set of Keys in Your Car. Extra keys can be easily found if a thief takes time to look.

Park in Well-lighted Areas. Over half of all vehicle thefts occur at night.

Park in Attended Lots. Auto thieves do not like witnesses and prefer unattended parking lots.

If You Park in an Attended Lot, Leave Only the Ignition/Door Key. If your trunk and glovebox use the same key as the door, have one of them changed. Don't give the attendant easy access to your glovebox and trunk. Upon returning, check the tires, spare tire, and battery to be sure they are the same as those you had when you parked.

Never Leave Your Car Running, Even if You'll Only be Gone For a Minute. Vehicles are commonly stolen at convenience stores, gas stations, ATMs, etc. Many vehicles are also stolen on cold mornings when the owner leaves the vehicle running to warm up.

Completely Close Car Windows When Parking. Don't make it any easier for the thief to enter your vehicle.

Don't Leave Valuables in Plain View. Don't make your car a more desirable target and attract thieves by leaving valuables in plain sight.

Park With Your Wheels Turned Toward the Curb. Rear wheels lock on four-wheel drive vehicles, making them difficult to tow. Front-wheel drive vehicles should be parked front end first.

Always Use Your Emergency Brake When Parking. In addition to ensuring safety, using the emergency brake makes your car harder to tow.

If You Have a Garage, Use It. If you have a garage, take the time to use it rather than parking outside where your vehicle is more vulnerable.

When parking in a Garage, Lock the Garage Door and Your Vehicle. By locking both the garage and vehicle doors, the chances of deterring a thief greatly improve.

Don't leave the registration or Title in Your Car. A car thief will use these to sell your stolen car. File the title at your home or office, and carry registration in your purse or wallet.

Disable Your Vehicle When Leaving it Unattended for an Extended Period. Remove the electronic ignition fuse, coil wire, rotor distributor, or otherwise disable your vehicle anytime thieves may have extended access to it.

Replace T-Shaped Door Locks With Straight Locks. Some vehicle doors have lock assemblies at window level that flare out in a knob or "T" shape. A thief can use various tools to gain access inside the vehicle, grab and pull the lock. Straight locks prevent this.

Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Engrave personal ID numbers on car stereos, cellular phones, etc., so the thief will have difficulty disposing of them.

Investing in Vehicle Protection

Ignition Kill Switch. Splice an inexpensive toggle switch into your ignition wire. The trick is hiding the switch well. Keypads, pressure pads and more expensive "immobilizers" and "passkeys" can also be used.

Fuel Kill Switch. The valve that halts the fuel supply is closed. Visible Steering Wheel Lock. Prevents the steering wheel from being turned.

Floorboard Locks. Devices that disable the gas or break pedal.

Gearshift Locks. Disables shifting of the transmission.

Tire/Wheel Locks. Prevents the vehicle from moving.

Hood Locks. Prevents the thief from gaining access to your security system and battery.

Armored Collar Around Steering Column. Protects the column and ignition.

Electronic Security Systems. Audio alarms sound loud warnings when doors/hood/trunk are opened. Optional sensors include glass breakage, motion, tampering and towing. Panic buttons and automatic engine disable features are also recommended.

Vehicle Tracking This is done with a transmitter hidden in the car that allows police to track the vehicle.

Drive safely!

Long-Term Arrival: 2007 Mercedes-Benz GL450

Fresh off a win in our 2007 SUOTY competition, the all-new Mercedes-Benz GL450 is the newest addition to our long-term test fleet. Already a major player in every other vehicle segment, it was only a question of time before M-B decided to get into the full-size luxury sport/utility market.

At just over 200 inches long, the GL is the largest vehicle in the Mercedes stable. But those extra inches make the third-row seat actually useable by occupants over six feet tall, a stretch for many other vehicles in this class. Surprisingly, though, the GL doesn't feel that big; as many editors observed, "It drives small."

Options are abundant for this vehicle, and we got most of them, starting with a whopper premium package that includes Parktronic, a power tailgate, DVD navigation, Sirius Satellite Radio, premium sound with rear controls, power tilt/telescoping steering, and BlueTooth hands-free communication for $4500. From there, we added rear-seat DVD entertainment ($2650), an off-road package (adaptive damping, two locking differentials, and front/rear skidplates for $2200), twin sunroofs ($1500), three-zone climate-control ($1320); metallic Barolo Red paint ($700), Macadamia leather ($1650), a rearview backup camera ($500), a wood and leather steering wheel ($540), and Bi-Xenon headlamps that turn with the steering wheel ($900). It all totals to an as-tested price of $72,135. A fully loaded GL450 runs at $79,195, that's over $24,000 just in options.

The GL450 has safety covered, too. Two-stage front airbags for driver and passenger, side bags in the front- and second-row seats, and a curtain bag that spans all three rows of seats. Combine that with a steel unit body andhigh-strength occupant cell, and you have yourself one safevehicle.

Shortly after its arrival, our new GL was off to Las Vegas with an editor for the Vegoose music festival, shuttling people to and from the venue, with many of the passengers noting how smoothly and quietly the vehicle rides. The GL's drivetrain is amazing. The all-aluminum V-8 has plenty of pep, and, mated to the seven-speed adaptive transmission, that power is easily put to the pavement through the full-time 4Matic all-wheel-drive system.

To say this is a popular vehicle would be an understatement: Since being released to our editors, the GL hasn't once sat in our garage overnight.

As always, we'll report back to you on everything we discover during our time with the Mercedes-Benz GL450.

2007 Chevrolet Tahoe

2007 Motor Trend Sport/Utility of the Year Award: Testing

Luxury SUV? Yes: GM hasn't done much decontenting to differentiate its big Chevy from its big GMC or Caddy. Chevrolet claims to sell more $35K-plus vehicles in the U.S. than anybody, thanks mostly to this, the Suburban, and the Corvette. But there's no Denali equivalent and nothing bigger than the 5.3-liter V-8 under the hood, and that's largely why the GMC Yukon edges out the Tahoe in our competition.

Our tester's LTZ package provides some of the Denali's flashiness with a chromed grille mesh, chrome door handles and side mirrors, and a cover for the center console. Most editors prefer the Chevy's clean lines with its modern, yet classic Bow-Tie grille, but the 320-horse 5.3-liter V-8 isn't the 6.2. It's efficient, registering 21 mpg on the EPA's highway loop, thanks to seamless cylinder deactivation. With its biggest engine, our sporty black Tahoe matched only the longer, 400-pound-heavier Ford Expedition EL in its 0-to-60-mph time and was 0.1 second slower through the quarter mile. While the Ford has independent rear suspension and thus a power fold-flat third row, the Tahoe, like other GMT-900s, makes do with a live rear axle, removable (but heavy) third-row seats, and a power-folding second row.

Still, model-by-model, the new big GMs are better designed and more refined than their Ford and Lincoln counterparts, and the Tahoe is no exception. Yes, the third row is too tight and leaves too little luggage space for road trips. But that's what the Suburban and Yukon XL are for.

Once capacity gears up, the Tahoe's four-speed will be replaced with the new six-speed automatic, and the 6.0-liter version of the small-block will become the top engine. Application of the 2009 Silverado's new DOHC turbodiesel V-8 would be nice, but that could be many years away, thanks to production limitations. As for a Tahoe SS, that's up to GM's Performance Group. The 403-horsepower Escalade may not be king of the T-900 hill forever.

Audi is one of the last automakers to jump into the sport/utility pool, but it did so with a splash. And it's thrown water on many onlookers in the process. The judges' notebooks were filled with superlatives for this one. "Wow! A completely different mode of surface transportation," according to Markus. "A marvel of overengineering and technology," says Lassa. Chirico summarizes: "Dynamically, the best of this year's field. Function and sport, dressed in an attractive European suit."

The Q7 shares its basic platform architecture with the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne, but is stretched to allow room for the ever more important third-row seat. Not everyone loves the exterior styling, but the interior is a typical Audi combination of high-quality materials, handsome design, a class-competitive safety package, and high creature-feature content. Audi's MMI controller system and screen seem easier to learn and use than others like BMW's. The adjustable suspension raises or lowers the ride height depending on the need and conditions. Third-row seat room isn't as good as it is in the GL450 or the GM sport/utilities, but it's handy to have for short trips and large enough for preteens. In terms of acceleration, braking, and handling tests, the Z7 ran away and hid from the rest of the field, large or small. The SUV version of Audi's 4.2-liter V-8 is a stormer, no doubt aided by the close ratios of the new six-speed automatic transmission, although the latter's shift phasing doesn't always seem in communication with the engine. There are other powertrains to consider as well. A less costly V-6 is on its way. Soon after will come a hybrid powertrain--which will likely make the Q7 the first three-row seat SUV to offer one--and possibly a turbodiesel. It's ahandsome, luxurious--musclecar-like--sport/utility that was worth the wait.

2009 Volkswagen Tiguan

"Make a u-turn when possible," urged the navigation as it attempted to get us back on track toward the Hungarian capital of Budapest. As we whipped Volkswagen's all-new 2009 Tiguan around, we got an early indication of its turning radius (tight) and electromechanical steering (quick and light at low speeds). A few zigzags later, we were finally pointed in the right direction.

Positioned as the Touareg's scrappy, smaller sibling, The Tiguan is arriving late to the crossover party. When it goes on sale in May next year with pricing starting in the mid-20s, the Tiguan will join an already crowded field littered with established offerings including the Honda CR-V and Toyota's RAV4. But unlike others in its class, there's not a lot of "cute" in this 'ute. The Tiguan strikes a more athletic, traditional SUV-style pose. Though it's based in large part on the latest version of VW's Golf/Rabbit, the Tiguan in no way looks or feels like a Golf behind the wheel -- it's been engineered with the goal of becoming the most capable and satisfying small crossover available for the U.S. market.

Underscoring the vehicle's importance to VW, scribes from some 50 countries were shuttled in and out of Budapest for the European press launch. We piloted a not-for-U.S.-spec, 4Motion-equipped Tiguan fitted with the automaker's intriguing new 1.4-liter Twincharger engine. Our tester, equipped with VW's slick-shifting six-speed manual, proved agile and carlike on the roads around Budapest. At 75 mph, some wind noise crept in during our miles on the Hungarian highways, though not much. When we needed to hit the skids, the Tiguan's four-wheel discs with ABS slowed the vehicle with little drama.

The Twincharger uses turbo and supercharging to help boost performance, and the variant we drove has solid numbers of 150 horsepower and 200 lb-ft of torque. Despite the induction tricks, the engine did struggle out of the gate, but once in the sweet spot above three grand, it moved the Tiguan more than adequately and was quiet and responsive at higher speeds. No matter, though, we won't be getting the Twincharger or any other of the multiple engine variants, at least not at launch. U.S. models will come ashore with VW's tried and true, 200-horsepower, 2.0-liter turbo. We've been told the automaker's 2.0-liter turbodiesel (set to make its U.S. debut in the 2008 Jetta) is all but assured as an eventual option.

During our first stopover, we had some time to climb in, out, and around the Tiguan. While the cabin isn't huge, it is well-screwed together, with an expanse of soft-touch material covering the dash. The seats are comfortable and nicely bolstered, and the second row's 60/40 bench features adjustable seatback angles and a drop-down armrest/beverage holder. The passenger seat folds flat for additional stowage if needed. The Tiguan's radio, nav, and HVAC controls are easy to operate and numerous storage areas dot the cabin, although we were less than impressed with the look of the panel surrounding the center stack -- it came off as a cheap bit in an otherwise nice-looking cabin. There is also a huge, panoramic glass roof option that opens up the cabin to the sky.

IBM scores 'Symphony' as free online Office rival

IBM Corp. has spun out productivity software included in the latest version of Lotus Notes as a free stand-alone suite to compete with Microsoft Corp.'s Office productivity suite.

The name for the suite, Symphony, is the same name IBM used for its first integrated productivity suite, which it offered in the 1980s but which never took off with customers. Mike Rhodin, general manager of Lotus Software for the IBM Software Group, said the company brought back the name to "herald in a new age" of productivity software.

Symphony includes Lotus Symphony Documents, Lotus Symphony Spreadsheets and Lotus Symphony Presentations. The applications are available online at a new Web site that will also serve as the home page for a community IBM hopes will grow around the suite.

Rhodin said IBM is offering Symphony in beta form because it wants the community to suggest improvements for the software so the suite can evolve more quickly than it could if the company were to work on it independently.

Like the productivity software built into Notes 8, Symphony is based on the open-source Eclipse platform and uses Open Document Format for XML (ODF) as its native file format. ODF is a document standard recognized by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), but a rival to Microsoft's Open XML (OOXML), which is the native format in Office. Microsoft's quest to have OOXML become a standard alongside ODF was dealt a significant blow when the ISO voted against fast-tracking approval of the format earlier this month.

IBM has been an ardent supporter of ODF for some time, but with Symphony the company is bringing this support into the Web 2.0 age. Symphony is an alternative not only to Office but to Google Docs & Spreadsheets, the search giant's own version of online document-editing and creation software. IBM also is offering fee-based telephone support for services if customers want that option.

In addition to Symphony, IBM Tuesday also unveiled Lotus Notes as a hosted service on Tuesday. Rhodin said the service is meant for the small-to-medium-size business market, for organizations up to about 10,000 users. According to IBM, the operational cost of hosted Lotus is about US$5 to $10 per user, per month.

In addition to Lotus Notes, customers can choose to include hosted versions of Lotus Sametime and Lotus Quickr as optional services, Rhodin said.

Moody friends. "[The commission] now has a license to go ahead, and they have a pretty aggressive posture. I think this bodes ill for some companies."

Among those already facing investigations or accusations from the EU antitrust agency, which is led by Neelie Kroes of the Netherlands, are chip makers Rambus Inc. and Intel Corp.; Qualcomm Inc., a wireless technology vendor; and Apple Inc.

Apple, in fact, will face two days of hearings before the commission starting Wednesday to answer charges that it and its four music label partners are violating EU laws with the pricing structure and purchase restrictions of the iTunes music store. In early April, the commission confirmed that it had sent a Statement of Objections (SO), the agency's term for an official complaint, to Apple and partners EMI, Sony BMG, Warner Music Group and Universal Music.

The SO claimed consumers are restricted in their choice of where to buy music -- because each country's version of iTunes only accepts orders from customers who live in that country -- and at what price. ITunes tracks sales for varying amounts, depending on the country.

But the commission steered clear of calling Apple another Microsoft in April. "The Statement of Objections does not allege that Apple is in a dominant market position," the group said in a statement at the time.

Yesterday, Kroes downplayed any link between the court's rejection of Microsoft's appeal and possible action against other U.S. technology companies. "You may hear scare stories about the supposed negative consequences of this ruling for other companies," she said during a news conference Monday afternoon. "Let me be clear. There is one company that will have to change its illegal behavior as a result of this ruling: Microsoft."

Microsoft, however, thought different.

During his own news conference yesterday, Brad Smith, Microsoft's general counsel, repeatedly pointed to Apple. "Apple has something like a 70% market share for digital music," said Smith. "ITunes is far and away the leading source for music on the Internet; the iPod is far and away the leading hardware device for digital music."

Even the U.S. Department of Justice weighed in. Thomas Barnett, the assistant attorney general for antitrust, yesterday said: "We are concerned that the standard applied to unilateral conduct by the CFI [Court of First Instance], rather than helping consumers, may have the unfortunate consequence of harming consumers by chilling innovation and discouraging competition."

Hovenkamp was confident that yesterday's decision would embolden the commission. "This was a landmark decision, and a landmark case," he said. "It stands for a couple of important things. First, it's a declaration of independence, a statement that their anticompetitive policy is not going to be dictated by U.S. policy. Second, it clears the way for the commission to pursue new cases.

"You're going to see a more aggressive commission that will go after high technology companies, especially those that are involved with networks or standard setting," Hovenkamp said.

"Rambus and Qualcom, certainly," he said, are among the companies at risk from a combative commission. "Intel? Perhaps. As for Apple, there are some undeveloped issues there."

In Apple's favor, he said, are European antitrust traditions that may let the iTunes operator and iPod maker off the hook. Europe's antitrust agency has typically looked differently at two kinds of pricing discrimination. The one where a company prices products differently in different countries in order to squash competition -- pricing products lower in nations where rivals exist, higher where competitors are lacking -- is usually treated harshly, said Hovenkamp. The other type of pricing discrimination, where a seller prices products based on what it thinks a particular country's buyers can bear -- more in Germany, for example, less in Portugal -- are not generally considered a competition problem.

"If Apple is pricing differentially because of economies and consumer buying power," said Hovenkamp, "it is probably safe. But if [it is] doing this to suppress competition, the commission may act."

Among the possible results of the hearings: fines levied to the tune of 10% of global net revenues. Kroes' agency could also dismiss the SO after the hearing.

"Europeans are much more comfortable with regulation," said Hovenkamp.

Apple did not reply to a request for comment on the court ruling yesterday or on the hearings that kick off tomorrow in Brussels.

Got a little couch potato?
Check out fun summer activities for kids.
